Fredericksburg, Va.-- The #17 University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated a pair of CAC foes in Christopher Newport and Penn State-Harrisburg on Friday. UMW dispatched the Captains 8-1, and the Lions 9-0 to move to 14-4, 3-0 CAC on the year.
UMW took all three doubles matches, with Tyler Carey and Evan Charles picking up a 9-7 win at one doubles. Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin won at two doubles 8-6, while Andrew Curtis and David Lunding-Johansson won 8-4 at three doubles.
The Eagles took five of the six singles matches, started by Carey at one winning 6-1, 6-2. Stratton Gilmore, David Lunding-Johansson and Brandon Griffin each won in straight set. Gilmore was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at three with David winning two and two at five. Griffin was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at six. Evan Charles rounded out the wins at four singles in three sets. Charles was a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) winner.
Against the Lions, UMW won all three doubles and all six singles matches in straight sets. Carey and Griffin teamed up at one doubles to win 8-2, while Lunding-Johansson and Andrew Curtis won by the sme score at two. Scott Buie and Alex Cragg picked up a doubles win at number three, 8-3.
Four of the six singles win were won 6-0, 6-0. Carey (one singles), Charles (two singles), Lunding-Johansson (three singles), and Cragg (six singles) each won by that score. Curtis won his singles match at number four by a score of 6-0, 6-1. Buie rounded out the wins at number five, 6-1, 6-1.
The Eagles return to the courts with a pair of home matches tomorrow. The Eagles host York at 10:00 a.m., then face Swarthmore at 2:00 p.m.
