UMW Men's Tennis Has Strong Showing at ITA Southeast Regional This Weekend

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington men's tennis team hosted and participated in the ITA Southeast Regional this weekend. Several Eagles advanced in their respected flights, including Marcell Rengifo, who won the B4 Singles Flight.

The Eagles advanced three doubles teams to the Round of 16 that included the teams of; Tyler Carey and Evan Charles, Andrew Curtis and Brandon Griffin, and Alex Blakhin and David Lunding-Johansson. On Sunday, Charles and Carey fell to Nick Garcia and Noah Jaochim of JHU by a score of 8-2. Curtis and Griffin defeated Swarthmore's Alex Min and Preston Poon 8-5 before falling to Garcia and Jaochim in the quarterfinals. Blakhin and Lunding-Johansson won their round of 16 match over CMU's Beisswanger and Kumar 9-8. The duo then CNU's Manilla and Shetty 9-7 to advance to the semifinals. The duo fell today in the semifinals to Garcia and Jaochim. 

Singles play was highlighted by Marcell Rengifo, who advanced all the way to the finals of the B4 Singles Flight. Rengifo defeated JUN's Bryan Gregory two and two to advance to the quarterfinals, where he knocked off John Adam of Randolph-Macon 6-2, 6-1. In the semis, Rengifo took care of Thomas Rishoff 6-3, 6-3. He faced off with Christopher Newport's Joona Rahko. Rengifo was a 6-3, 6-3 winner to take the crown.
