UMW's Carey, Lunding-Johansson, Helbling Gain All-CAC Tennis Awards as All-CAC Teams Announced

YORK, Pa. - For the first time in CAC men’s tennis history, the conference coaches selected Co-Players of the Year and Co-Rookies of the Year.

Mary Washington sophomore Tyler Carey (Moseley, Va./Cosby) and St. Mary’s junior Andrew Gear (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) were picked as the 2013 Co-Players of the Year while UMW’s David Lunding-Johansson (Stockholm, Sweden/Djursholm) and Salisbury’s Eric Spangler (Clinton, Md./Grace Brethren Christian) were selected as the 2013 Co-Rookies of the Year.

Carey led a sweep of UMW players to earn first-team All-CAC singles honors this season.  He was also one of four Eagles to earn first-team doubles recognition.  Carey is the 10th Eagle to be named CAC Player of the Year (three have been multiple winners).  It’s the eighth-straight year, and the 14th time since 1998, that a UMW player was named the CAC Player of the Year.

Gear, a three-time all-star and 2011 conference Rookie of the Year, is the first St. Mary’s student-athlete to win the CAC Men’s Tennis Player of the Year award.  He was also the only Seahawk on the 2013 All-CAC team.

Lunding-Johansson, a first-team 2013 singles and doubles all-conference choice, is the eighth UMW player to win the Rookie of the Year award while Spangler, a second-team singles and first-team doubles all-star this season, is the seventh Sea Gull to win the award.  It’s the second-straight year that an Eagle and Sea Gull were picked to share the award.

Eagles joining Carey and Lunding-Johansson on the 2013 All-CAC singles and doubles teams are senior Alex Blahkin (Moscow, Russia/Saddlebrook Prep) along with sophomores Evan Charles (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) and Kaleb Nyugen (Wincehster, Va./Sherando).

Blahkin, the 2012 CAC Player of the Year, is making his third-straight All-CAC team appearance.  Charles was a first-team all-star singles pick while Nyugen was a first-team doubles choice last year.

UMW senior Will Apperson (Louisville, Ky./Ballard), a four-time first-team all-conference selection and the 2010 CAC Rookie of the Year, secured the sixth singles All-CAC position while sophomore Donato Rizzolo (Juniper, Fla./Laurel Springs) paired with Charles as a second-team doubles choice.

In addition to second-team All-CAC singles, Spangler was a first-team doubles choice with sophomore partner Daniel Albers (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls).  Albers moved up to first team after gaining second-team honors in 2012.

Four of Spangler’s SU teammates picked up 2013 All-CAC singles and doubles awards, including senior Adam Goldberger (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch), juniors Demetri Vrahnos (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) and Shane Gunther (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s) and sophomore Nick Mancuso (Victor, N.Y./Victor).  Goldberger and Mancuso were second-team singles and doubles all-stars in 2012.
