UMW's Carey Falls to #4 Seed Ybarra in NCAA Division III Nationals Singles Tourney

University of Mary Washington sophomore Tyler Carey jumped out to an early lead but fell to fourth-seeded Ryan Ybarra of the University of Texas-Tyler in the first round of the NCAA Division III national singles championship on Thursday in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Set scores were 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In the first set, both players exhibited some nerves on serve, as each player broke the other twice, befor Carey held serve to go up 3-2. After each player held serve, Carey faced a love-40 on serve, but battled back for deuce and gained an ace, leading to a hold and 5-4 lead. From there, Carey held for the set at 6-4.

In the second, both players again started with a break of serve, and Carey led, 3-2, before a break and hold pushed Ybarra ahead, 4-3, and the changeover. After facing a pair of break points to tie the score, Ybarra held on and went on to win the second, 6-3, and the final set, 6-1.

Carey closes his sophomore season with 15 victories, including nine after being moved to number one in the Eagles' lineup.
