UMW Swimming Coach Abby Brethauer Welcomes 2016 Recruiting Class

After winning both men's and women's Capital Athletic Conference titles, and finishing with five All-Americans at the NCAA Championships, the University of Mary Washington swimming program has announced its 2020 class. The women will bring in eleven new faces to the squad as well as transfer Madison Noga while the men are bringing in ten.

On the women's side, Carley Vaughn and Noga will be strong contributors in the 100/200 butterfly events. Kaylie Benson and Erica Piper will add their talents to the backstroke group. Both McKinzie Turner and Makenzie Katzer are looking to make a splash in the breaststroke events. Hailee Morse and Sara Dye will be great additions in the butterfly and breaststroke. In the IM, Erin Whitesell and Julia Geskey look to make their mark. Maysa Kuykendall will swim everything freestyle, joined by teammate Allison Pryor in the distance events. Despite losing a deep and talented class to graduation, the Eagles are poised to make a run for their 27th CAC championship and a return trip to NCAAs in March.

For the men, look for Noah Carpenter and Carsen Mumford to make immediate impacts in both the 200 and 400 IMs. Austin Farrar will join a talented distance team that had 1-2 finishes in both the 500 and mile at CACs last year and Garrett Ross will be a key addition to the sprint side of things along with classmate Mark Dye. Kleigh Koupal will join Dye and Mumford in the breaststroke events, while Quin Shurow and Zachary Wallace will head into the 100/200 backstroke events. Louis Johnson and Matthew Whoriskey are the butterfliers of this first year class and look to add depth to a small but talented cadre of Eagle flyers. With their lone NCAA qualifier returning as a senior, the Eagles look to collect another CAC title and take a larger group to NCAAs.

When asked about the class, Head Coach Abby Brethauer said, "I am very much looking forward to getting this group on campus and in the water with the team. They will bring a lot of talent and energy to the pool deck which is very exciting, but beyond that they are the type of student-athlete who will build on the tradition of excellence in the classroom and the pool that we strive to achieve"
