UMW Swim Teams Host Special Olympics

As part of the NCAA DIII partnership with Special Olympics the UMW swim team hosted a clinic for the Area 11 Special Olympics swimmers. Over 25 local special olympic athletes traveled to the UMW campus for the clinic where they worked one on one with the UMW student-athletes on their strokes as well as starts and turns. When asked about the clinic UMW sophomore Tyler Gimple said, "It was a lot of fun to work with the Special Olympics athletes and share our love and passion of the sport with them."

UMW Employee and stand out Special Olympic athlete Grace Anne Braxton participated in the event and wrote the following thank you note to the team, "I want to thank you so much for what you did yesterday. It made me feel really special and lucky to know students like you"

NCAA DIII athletics has partnered with Special Olympics with the goal of improving the lives of Special Olympics athletes through their involvement with Division III student-athletes and to foster a mutual learning experience between Division III student-athletes and Special Olympics athletes. Through this partnership, Division III student-athletes across the country will be encouraged to participate in existing Special Olympics events, create their own events, or otherwise serve to support Special Olympics organization. The activities pursued by student-athletes will vary in each state and region, tailored to best utilize the student-athletes' time and local resources.
