Indianapolis, In.-- Junior Alex Anderson won his second individual championship this week, and his third overall in the 200 fly on Friday. Anderson won by just 2/100ths over Redlands Jeff Depew.

In the morning prelims, Alex finished in third, with a time of 1:47.84. He was seeded first in the nation heading into the morning swim.

Anderson started the first 50 meters with a second lead over Depew. Alex would keep that lead over the next 100 meters, before Depew made a furious comeback. The two would go neck and neck into the wall, but it was Anderson who out-touched Depew by just 2/100ths of a second to earn the victory. Anderson finished in 1:45.36, with Depew finishing in 1:45.38. Karl Mering from Whitman finished right behind Anderson and Depew in 1:45.78.

"After a close race last year where Alex was on the losing end of a touch out, it was great to see him come out on the winning side this year," coach Brethauer said.

"I was very focused on this race this year," Anderson said following the race. "I was motivated to be faster than my conference time. I am happy to come out with the win. This is my favorite race to swim, so it made it that much more special and fun."

Anderson concludes his 2013-14 season with this race, winning his second championship this year and his third in two years. Anderson joins Shannon Hutcherson (women's swimming, 1993), Myra Simpson (women's track, 1996), and Paul Bristow and Dan Uyar (men's tennis doubles) as an individual national champion at UMW and is the first to win multiple championships with three.
