1995-96 MWC Men's Swimming Season in Review

In 1995-96, the Eagles smashed the record books in a landmark season. MWC established new school marks in both victories and winning percentage during an 8-2 campaign, which concluded with a Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) championship.

Several All-CAC performers, of which just two were seniors, buoyed the Eagles to new heights. In winning the CAC team title, three MWC individuals and one relay team swam "B" (provisional) cuts for NCAA Division III Nationals. Junior Chris Rice (Perry, NY) and senior Tim Selgas (Harrisburg, PA) went1-2 in the CAC 100-yard butterfly en route to "B" cuts. Selgas earned All-American status at Nationals with a ninth-place finish in the 100 butterfly, and an 11th-place finish in the 200 butterfly. He became MWC's first-ever men's swimming All-American. Senior Scott Wagner (Burke, VA) – the school's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year - swam a "B" time in the 100 breaststroke. The CAC-best 400 medley quartet of Selgas, Wagner,

backstroker Steve Smith (Sr./Stephens City, VA) and freestyler Billy Prout (Jr./Richmond, VA; CAC 200 free champion) also swam a "B" cut. Other returning All-CAC swimmers include: Matt Anderson (Jr./ Wilmington, DE), Alex Inge (Sr./Lynchburg, VA), Todd Leatherman (Sr./Lexington Park, MD; CAC 1,650 free champion) and Matt Nisley (Sr./ Fredericksburg, VA).

Division I Richmond joins Division III stalwarts Gettysburg, Washington & Lee and Catholic on the 1996-97 dual-meet slate. MWC hosts the seventh annual CAC Championships on Feb. 14-16.

“This is the strongest group of returning swimmers MWC has ever had,” said CAC Coach of the Year Matt Kinney. “With continued dedication and a banner season behind us, our team is poised to make an even greater impact at the national level this year.”
