1988-89 Mary Washington College Men's Swimming Season in Review

The immediate future of MWC men's swimming gleams brightly, as a team devoid of seniors made waves in 1988-89. At the season-ending Atlantic States Swimming and Diving Championships, nearly every Mary Washington mark was shattered.

Paced by sophomore Evan Stiles and freshman Paul Papodopoulos, the Eagles rebounded from a 5-6 season in 1987-88 to win five of their first eight meets this past year. Stiles, holder of three individual records and a member of four record-setting relays, is a standout in the butterfly (he narrowly missed qualifying for NCAAs in the 200 with a school record 1:57.65 at Atlantic States) and individual medley (he broke the 200 IM record with a 1:59.30 at Atlantic States).

At the Atlantic States meet, Papodopoulos set a school record in the 100 freestyle (48.99) and tied junior Dan Hall's mark of 22.11 in the 50 free. Freshman Laris Karklis broke the MWC 500 free mark at Atlantic States (5:13.24), while classmate Kevin Osborn holds the 200 (1:51.97) and 1000 free (10:53.04) records.

Sophomore Curt Dalgard is the team's top breaststroker; he owns records in the 100 (1:03.81) and 200 (2:20.64). Classmate Jon Boroughs also holds a pair of school marks, in the 100 and 200 backstroke.
