Kautzman's Score Lifts UMW Men's Soccer Past NC Wesleyan, 3-2, in Opener

Senior defender Jacob Kautzman scored his first collegiate goal at 70:14 to break a 2-2 tie and give the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan College on Thursday afternoon at the Battleground in both teams' season lidlifter. 

UMW jumped on top early, scoring just 37 seconds into play, as senior Josh Kirkland scored on a Carter Berg assist. Kirkland upped the Eagle advantage to 2-0 at 51:19, but the Bishops found goals at 52:46 and 66:36, setting up Kautzman's heroics.

The Eagles led in shots, 14-7, and registered six corner kicks to three for NCWC. UMW senior goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger stopped one shot in net.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles host Guilford College at 1:00 p.m.
