The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Rowan University in double overtime at the Battleground on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Eagles close with a record of 14-4-4.
Mary Washington, like in Saturday's first round, dodged an early opponent score to score in the opening minutes. Senior midfielder Jake Lovinger corralled a loose ball in the box after a defensive misplay to put the Eagles ahead at 4:18.
Rowan knotted the score before intermission, as Jake Logar scored on a Matt Fahey cross from the right side, and then went ahead at 60:35 on a Wilby Alfred score off a loose ball in the box. The Eagles responded to tie the score at 2-2 at 77:03, as senior Gabriel Soriano took a deflected save off a touch from junior Jeremy Hokenson to pull the Eagles even.
Rowan netted the game winner in the second extra period at 102:08 on a breakaway, as Alfred eluded the defense to pass to a cutting Corey Haines.
Rowan outshot the Eagles, 16-8, while Mary Washington led in corner kicks, 7-2. Junior Kenny Kurtz had five saves in net for Mary Washington, while James Weinberg had three for Rowan.
