UMW Men's Soccer Tops Keystone, 3-0, in NCAA Tournament First Round

Junior forward Jeremy Hokenson scored a pair of goals, and freshman Josh Kirkland added a goal and two assists to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Keystone College in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 14-3-4 on the season, and advance to Sunday's second round.

After Keystone came up empty on several early chances, the Eagles scored first at 13:34 as Hokenson scored on a loose ball following a shot from Kirkland. The Eagles remained in front, 1-0, through intermission.

In the second half, Kirkland scored on a volley from a pass from sophomore Noah Mazzatenta at 60:21 to give the Eagles an insurance tally. Hokenson capped the scoring at 86:25 on a Kirkland assist.

The Eagles led in shots, 13-6, as well as corner kicks, 4-3. Junior goalie Kenny Kurtz made two saves in recording the shutout, while Keystone's Erick Gomez made five stops.

Mary Washington will face Rowan University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Battleground in second round action. Rowan defeated Salve Regina University in a penalty kick shootout following a scoreless regulation and overtime contest. The Eagles' NCAA Tournament win is their first since 2001.
