UMW Men’s Soccer Plays to 2-2 Draw Against St. Mary’s

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday evening. The Eagles are now 11-3-3 overall, and 6-2-1 in the CAC.

In the early going, the two teams went back-and-forth with shots and both goalies had to come up with good saves to keep the game tied at 0-0. The Eagles had a good shot in the 8th minute when Jacob Lovinger had a shot at goal, but was saved at the goal by the Seahawks team.

St. Mary's got on the board first and gained a 1-0 advantage in the 35th minute. The Eagles struck right back as they scored three minutes later to tie it at 1-1. Kris Schulte scored off an assist from Noah Mazzatenta. The two teams played even over the last seven minutes of the half and the game went tied 1-1.

The Seahawks got a second goal early in the second half to go up 2-0 in the 55th minute. The two teams battled and Kenny Kurtz had to make some tough saves to keep the Eagles within a goal. UMW kept fighting for that second goal to tie the match, and finally got it in the 84th minute as Gabriel Soriano scored a goal. The teams played out the tie and took the match into overtime.

The Seahawks had an early shot on goal in the first minute of overtime, but Kurtz made another key save. Mazzatenta recorded the only shot on goal in the first overtime, but was saved away.

In the second overtime, the Eagles searched for the game-winning goal but came up just short on a few attempts. Mazzatenta had the best look in the second overtime as well but his shot hit the post.

UMW outshot St. Mary's 25-23, and recorded eight corner kicks. Kurtz made six saves in goal for the Eagles.

UMW will be back in action for the regular season finale as they will host York for a match at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles will look to defeat the Spartans and get revenge as they lost 1-0 in their previous matchup.
