UMW Men’s Soccer Tops Salisbury, 2-0, on Wednesday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team topped Salisbury University, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 11-3-2 overall, and 6-2 in the CAC. Senior Ben Ahrens scored the first goal, and junior Jeremy Hokenson added the second goal.

In a back-and-forth first half, the Eagles had the first chance at goal as Gabriel Soriano fired a shot from outside the 18 but was stopped by the goalie in the 12th minute. Just a minute later, Salisbury went on the counter attack and almost put the ball in the back of the net, but senior Luke Turney came sprinting in from the other side and kept the ball out of the goal.

UMW got on the board in the 28th minute to go up 1-0. The Eagles earned a free kick and off the free kick Andres Cabrera took a shot that was blocked. Senior Ahrens collected the blocked shot and finished past the goalie to give UMW a lead. The Eagles defense held strong for the rest of the half and didn't allow a shot from there.

The Eagles came out seeking an insurance goal in the second half. UMW got that second goal in the 59th minute as Soriano crossed a ball into Hokenson and put the Eagles up 2-0. UMW played possession over the last 30 minutes of the game to stay ahead and take the victory.

UMW outshot Salisbury 9-4, and had three corner kicks. Kenny Kurtz made one save in goal for the Eagles.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to St. Mary's for a game at 7 p.m. The Eagles defeated St. Mary's 4-0 in their previous match.
