Soriano's Late Score Lifts UMW Men's Soccer Past #6 Montclair State, 2-1

Junior Gabriel Soriano scored the go-ahead goal with 10 minutes remaining to lift the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over sixth-ranked Montclair State University on Saturday in the Johns Hopkins University Classic in Baltimore, Md. The Eagles, with their second victory over a nationally-ranked opponent thus far, improve to 3-0 on the season.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Eagles hold a slim 5-3 edge in shots, Montclair State scored at 54:40 on a rebounded save of a shot in traffic for the game's first tally.

The Eagles tied the score at 1-1 at 71:01, as Soriano sailed a free kick from near the corner to a charging Ben Ahrens, who redirection hit off the goal post and to Joshua Everard, who slid the ball into the open goal. Soriano capped the scoring at 79:50, with an unassisted strike from the top of the box.

Mary Washington led in shots, 13-10, while Montclair State held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Junior goalie Kenny Kurtz picked up the win with one save on record.

The Eagles will face Washington & Lee University on Sunday in Baltimore at 3:30 p.m.
