Carey, Kilby Claim Top Honors as VaSID College Division All-State Soccer Team Announced

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – University of Mary Washington midfielder Justin Carey and Christopher Newport University midfielder Tanner Dail headlined the 2018 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Men's Soccer Team released Tuesday. Carey was named the VaSID Player of the Year while Dail was selected as the Rookie of the Year. University of Mary Washington's Jason Kilby was named the Coach of the Year.

 

Eleven different programs from across the State were represented on the All-State team recognizing the best men's soccer players at the Division II, Division III or NAIA level. Four programs had multiple players honored with the University of Lynchburg leading the voting with six All-State performers. Mary Washington had four picks on the All-State team, followed by Washington and Lee University with three selections and Christopher Newport with two.

 

Carey, a senior midfielder from Leesburg, Va., was the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Year. He was also a first -team All-America selection and a first-team All-Region pick by the United Soccer Coaches. Carey scored a team-high eight goals and added three assists for a total of 19 points during the 2018 season. The Eagles midfielder had three game-winning goals, including the game-winner against nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins.

 

Dail, a freshman midfielder from Hampton, Va., was named the CAC Co-Rookie of the Year in 2018. He ranked third on the CNU team in scoring with four goals for eight points, including a pair of game-winning goals. Dail played in all 16 games for the Captains and led the team's midfielders in minutes played.

 

Kilby led Mary Washington to a 14-1-5 overall record during the 2018 season. The Eagles, ranked inside the Top 15 for most of the season, won the CAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season.

 

Carey headlined the All-State first team selections and was joined in the first-team midfield by Washington and Lee's Dylan Ritch and Randolph College's Adam Watson. The All-State forwards included Christendom College's Pete Day, University of Lynchburg's Abibi Osman, Mary Washington's Ryan Van Maanen and Bridgewater College's Thomas White. Earning first-team recognition as defenders were Eastern Mennonite University's Emmanuel Boamah, Christopher Newport's Bobby Seifert and Lynchburg's Austin Kues. The first-team goalkeeper was Lynchburg's Dylan McLaurin.

 

Joining Dail on the second-team at midfield were Hampden-Sydney College's Spell Carr along with Lynchburg's Jack Ashby and Ben Mackey. The second-team forwards were Lynchburg's Joey Daly, Emory & Henry College's Tyequis Stallins and Virginia Wesleyan University's Ricky Perrault. The second team defenders were Mary Washington's Gary Foley and the Washington and Lee tandem of Oliver Dolberg and Jack Rawlins. Mary Washington's Ken Kurtz was the second-team goalkeeper.

 

VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an Academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University and College Divisions. Membership to VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
