Senior midfielder Ryan Van Maanen scored the game's lone goal at 58:37, and sophomore goalkeeper Ken Kurtz made a series of incrdible saves in the final 25 minutes of action, as the 12th ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated St. Mary's College, 1-0, in the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference championship match, played before a full house at the Battleground Athletic Complex. The Eagles gain their 10th conference championship - most in league history - in claiming their second consecutive crown.

In the early going, St. Mary's applied pressure to the Eagles, but for much of the rest of the first half, UMW knocked on the door, but couldn't find the nets. The Eagles carried a 5-2 advantage in shots in the opening frame.

In the second, the action was more wide open, with both teams gaining opportunities in transition. Finally, at 58:37, junior Idrissa Barrie found Van Maanen, whose persistence resulted in a goal, giving the Eagles a lead that they would not forfeit, despite a barrage from the Seahawks over the last 25 minutes.

Kurtz made seven saves in the second half, as the Seahawks turned up the pressure after falling behind, with 13 second half shots. In addition to Kurtz's stellar play, UMW defenders Conor MacMurdy and Jacob Lovinger also cleared balls from near the goal to preserve the shutout, UMW's 13th of the season.

In all, the Eagles were outshot, 15-14, but kicked 11 corner kicks to four for St. Mary's. Kurtz had eight saves in all, while St. Mary's 'keeper Patrick Paolini had six saves.

The Eagles advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, and 11th time overall. The selection show for Division III will take place on Monday at 1:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
