The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team scored three goals in the first half that helped them secure a 5-1 victory at St. Mary's on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 8-0-2 overall, and 1-0-1 in the CAC.
In the first half, Justin Carey got the scoring started for UMW as he banged in a free kick from the edge of the box in the 20th minute. The Eagles didn't stop there as they added a second goal just five minutes later as Idrissa Barrie scored on an assist from Jeremy Hokenson to put UMW up 2-0.
Over the next 13 minutes, the two teams played back-and-forth as they both had some chances. Noah Mazzatenta gave the Eagles a three goal lead as he put away a shot that was assisted by Joshua Everard at the 38:37 mark. UMW held a 3-0 lead going into half.
Both teams played even over the first 30 minutes of the second half. St. Mary's scored a goal in the 76th minute to put the score at 3-1. Hokenson put the game away in the 83rd minute as he was played a long ball, headed it to himself, and then played it past the goalie to put the Eagles up 4-1. Ben Ahrens capped the scoring for UMW as he netted a goal in the last minute to secure a 5-1 win for the Eagles.
UMW had 11 shots and one corner kick. Ken Kurtz made six saves on the day.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Frostburg St. with the first touch set for 6 p.m.
