#17 UMW Men's Soccer Tops Catholic, 2-0, on Wednesday Afternoon

The seventeenth-ranked University of Mary Washington men's soccer team topped Catholic University, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles improve to 6-0-1 on the season.

After a week off due to Hurricane Florence, UMW came out ready to play as they had a great chance at goal just one minute into the game. Conor MacMurdy missed just wide on a header off of a throw-in from Gary Foley. Catholic responded with three corner kicks over the next 19 minutes but were headed away by the Eagles' strong defense.

The two teams played even for the next 20 minutes before Jason Tillerson delivered a throw-in to Joe Hatcher. Hatcher then flicked it on to Will Donohoe who got a foot on it and put UMW ahead 1-0 in the 43rd minute.

In the second half, both teams went back and forth as both had opportunities in the first 10 minutes. MacMurdy put UMW up 2-0 in the 63rd minute as this time he finished a header off of a perfectly placed corner kick from Gabriel Soriano.

From there, the Eagles defense shut down Catholic's offense as they allowed just four shots and held on to win 2-0.

UMW produced 10 shots and three corner kicks. Ken Kurtz made four saves on the day and recorded his fifth shutout of the season.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday as they will travel to Widener at 5:30 p.m.
