UMW Men's Soccer Falls at Washington & Lee, 2-0, in NCAA Tournament 1st Round

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision at Washington & Lee University on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship. The Eagles' season comes to a close with a mark of 15-5-1.

The Generals struck early in the contest, scoring off a corner kick at 5:38, as Oliver Dolberg scored on a Sterling Kirk assist. The Generals held the lead through halftime, despite UMW holding the bulk of possession.

The score stood at 1-0 until the 74th minute, due in large part to the play of senior goalkeeper Matt Spencer, who made three amazing saves, including one after a deflection off the cross bar. W&L was able to find the insurance tally at 73:52, as Kevin Lencioni scored unassisted.

The Generals led in shots 17-12 (including a 14-8 margin after halftime), and in corner kicks, 9-6. Spencer made nine saves for the Eagles, while Gillen Beck had four saves for Washington & Lee.

UMW closes the season with a 15-5-1 record, having won the CAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tourna,ent for the first time since 2001.
