UMW Men's Soccer Closes Regular Season with 4-3 Victory at Penn State Harrisburg

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Penn State Harrisburg, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon in both teams' regular season finale. The Eagles head to the postseason with a 12-4-1 record.

The homestanding Lions opened the scoring quickly, as Chase Vilga scored at 2:42 on an assist from Victor Weaver. The Eagles knotted the game at 1-1 at 10:13, as junior Justin Carey scored on an assist from sophomore Idrissa Barrie. The Eagles grabbed the lead at 29:44, when senior Tommy Mead used a Jeremy Hokenson assist, but  Harrisburg tied the score again at 37:20 on a goal from Joey Aman.

The Eagles gained control in the second half, as the defense tightened and the offense found goals from Hokenson on a Ryan Van Maanen assist at 51:40 and Joe Hatcher at 76:57 on a pass from Gary Foley. Harrisburg tightened the margin to 4-3 with two minutes remaining on a Christian Schmoyer goal.

The Eagles led in shots, 14-11, as well as in corner kicks, 6-5. UMW goalkeeper Matt Spencer made three saves, including two in the final minute, in gaining the win. Harrisburg goalie Joshua Myers had five saves as well.

UMW will be the third seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament, and will host a first round game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., against an opponent to be determined.
