UMW Men's Soccer Goalie Matt Spencer Named CAC Defensive Player of the Week for Third Time

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Andrew Gogolin and Mary Washington senior Matt Spencer earned CAC Men's Soccer weekly honors for Oct. 9, 2017.   

Offensive Player of the Week

Christopher Newport senior Andrew Gogolin was named CAC Offensive Player of the Week after totaling two goals and one assist and contributing to both game-winning goals in a 2-0 week for the Captains. Gogolin opened the week with a goal and an assist in a victory over Southern Virginia, including the assist on the game-winning score. Later in the week, he tallied the game-winner against Frostburg State, helping the Captains improve their winning streak to eight games.

Mary Washington senior Matt Spencer earned CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the third time this year after posting a pair of shutout wins in CAC action last week. Spencer registered a pair of saves in a 1-0 win at Frostburg State on Wednesday, and added five stops in a 2-0 shutout win over York on the road on Saturday. He has posted a 0.81 GAA with 39 saves in 11 games, with five shutouts.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Mary Washington re-entered the United Soccer Coaches national rankings last week at No. 25, while Christopher Newport is receiving votes in the D3soccer.com poll ... Now four games into the conference season, Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, and St. Mary's are tied atop the standings at 4-0 in CAC play ... CNU junior goalkeeper Zack Pedini earned a shutout against Frostburg State by making three saves, and also picked up combined shutout over Southern Virginia after playing the first half against the Knights ... Mary Washington juniors Gary Foley and Justin Carey each had game-winners for the Eagles last week ... Marymount sophomore goalkeeper John Valcicak totaled 16 saves last week, including a new career high with 11 against St. Mary's on Saturday. He currently sits second in the league in saves with 70. Junior Sebastian Hendi scored twice in the final four minutes to give Marymount a 2-1 comeback victory over Wesley. Hendi is tied for fourth in the CAC with six goals for the year ... Zack Haussler became St. Mary's all-time career shutouts leader with a pair of clean sheets. Haussler broke the tie for No. 1 with three saves in a 1-0 shutout of Salisbury for his 17th shutout, surpassing Rick Besore's 16 shutouts (2004-07). He then added to his legacy with a 3-0 shutout of Marymount, needing just one save for his 18th clean sheet. Haussler currently owns a 7-1 record with five shutouts ... Salisbury sophomore Dolph Hegewisch led the Sea Gulls in shots with nine in two games, while three came on goal ... Southern Virginia senior Marrott Weekes scored a pair of goals in game against Wesley, including the game-winner. The captain was crucial in controlling the midfield for the Knights ... Wesley freshman Darius-David Robinson tallied two goals and assist in two CAC contests for the Wolverines. Robinson is tied for fourth in the CAC in goals (6). Goalkeeper Kyle Springsteen made seven stops in two CAC matches for the Wolverines.
