UMW Men's Soccer Rallies to Top Salisbury, 2-1, on Saturday

After allowing a goal midway through the second half, the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team tied the score less than one minute later, and found the game winner with a penalty kick with 10 minutes left to defeat Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. UMW improves to 7-2-1 overall, and 2-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

After a defensive stalemate in the first half that saw just two shots - both by the Eagles - Salisbury found the scoreboard first, netting a header from Joseph Scarpino on a Dylan Parks cross at 66:03. The Eagles answered quickly, as senior Tommy Mead scored on an Idrissa Barrie assist just 57 seconds later, at 77:00.

At 80:24, the Eagles applied pressure in the penalty area, and the Sea Gulls were whistled for a hand ball. Junior Gary Foley connected on the ensuing penalty kick for the eventual game winner.

The Eagles led in shots, 7-3, as well as in corner kicks, 6-2. Eagle keeper Matt Spencer gained the win, while Salisbury's Trevor Burkhart took the loss with one save.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Frostburg State University at 4:00 p.m.
