Hokenson's Late Goal Lifts UMW Men's Soccer Past Roanoke, 2-1, on Saturday

Freshman Jeremy Hokenson scored the game winning goal with 5:08 remaining in regulation, giving the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over visiting Roanoke College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-1-1 on the season.

Roanoke opened the scoring early on, as Jose Robertson scored on an Atticus Cooke cross at 7:43. Roanoke played with the 1-0 lead through halftime, and 10 minutes into the second half.

At 55:29, Gary Foley scored on a penalty kick for the Eagles, following a hand ball in the penalty area, for his first tally of the season. Hokenson then scored the game winner at 84:52, following his own shot, which hit the post, with a header for the go ahead goal.

Roanoke led in shots, 11-9, as well as in corner kicks, 3-2. UMW goalkeeper Matt Spencer made seven saves in recording the win, while Nick Tadros had four saves for Roanoke.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Dickinson College at 5 p.m.
