UMW Men's Soccer Opens With 3-0 Win Over Methodist

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used a goal late in the first half and another shortly into the second to power a 3-0 victory over Methodist University on Friday evening in the UMW Soccer Classic at the Battleground.

With 1:09 remaining in the first half, the Eagles reached the scoreboard on a penalty kick from senior Tommy Mead, and held the lead through halftime. In the second half, sophomore Jacob Lovinger scored on a Lucas Turney assist up the middle of the field with a one-touch to up the Eagle lead to 2-0. Freshman Ryan Muniz capped the scoring for UMW off a deflection at 76:10.

The Eagles held a 10-5 advantage in shots, and a 6-1 lead in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Matt Spencer recorded four saves in gaining the shutout for the Eagles, the 15th of his career.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host 11th ranked Messiah College, who defeated Chapman University, 3-1, on Friday in Saturday's finale starting at 5 p.m.
