Burke's Two Scores Lift UMW Men's Soccer Past St. Mary's, 2-1 in 2OT, on Wednesday

Senior forward Jacob Burke scored a pair of goals, including the game winner with 3:15 remaining in the second overtime, to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 triumph over St. Mary's College of Md. in a key Capital Athletic Conference matchup on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 11-3 overall and 6-1 in CAC play, while the Seahawks fall to 10-3-2 and 4-2-1.

The Eagles came out firing in the early action, controlling the early possession, but it was St. Mary's who found the goal first, as Khalid Balogun connected on a penalty kick at 19:17. The Eagles continued to pressure, and found the tying score at 36:32, when Burke scored on a Lucas Turney assist.

The game remained tied throughout regulation and the first overtime, but UMW found the winner as Burke took a pass from classmate Riley Fisher in the 18, and his shot deflected off a defender and into goal.

The Eagles led in shots, 14-8, and in corner kicks, 11-4. UMW goalkeeper Matt Spencer made three saves for the Eagles, while St. Mary's' Zach Haussler had four stops for the Seahawks.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday when they host Wesley College for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
