UMW Men's Soccer Tops Southern Virginia, 3-0, to Improve to 10-2; Off to Best Start Since 2006

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team blanked Southern Virginia University, 3-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground to improve to 10-2 on the season, their best start since 2006. The Eagles move to a perfect 5-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

UMW moved ahead at 38:13, as senior Jacob Burke scored on an assist from sophomore Gary Foley. Foley sent a free kick toward the box for Burke, who headed the ball over the outstretched arm of the SVU goalie and into the net.

The Eagles' second score came in similar fashion, as a ball played forward from Foley was headed by Burke to Conor Mac Murdy, whose header again snuck between the keeper's arm and in just before the final horn sounded to end the first half.

UMW struck quickly in the second, as Christian Trout scored unassisted at 50:28, capping the scoring.

Mary Washington led in shots, 27-1, and in corner kicks, 14-0. Junior goalkeeper Curran Smolinsky recorded the shutout in goal without a save.

The Eagles, 5-0 in CAC action, will visit fellow undefeated Christopher Newport University on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
