UMW Men's Soccer Tops York, 2-0, at Rainy Battleground to Improve to 9-2 Overall

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated York College of Pa., 2-0, on Saturday at a rainy Battleground to improve to 9-2 on the season, including a 4-0 mark in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles jumped on top early, scoring on an own goal at 4:10. That would be all the offense either team would muster in the opening half. In the second, senior Riley Fisher added an insurance score at 61:14 to cap the scoring.

Reserve goalkeeper Curran Smolinsky was called into action following a yellow card on starter Matt Spencer in goal, and promptly saved a York penalty kick with 22:53 remaining to preserve the shutout. Smolinsky had three saves in relief.

York held a 14-6 shot advantage, as well as an 8-3 lead in corner kicks. York goalie Charlie Johnson had three saves, while Spencer and Smolinsky combined for three saves in the shutout.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Southern Virginia University in another Capital Athletic Conference tilt. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
