Second Half Surge Leads UMW Men's Soccer Past Marymount in CAC Opener, 2-0

Riley Fisher and Ran Van Maanen each found the net to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Marymount University on Saturday evening in Arlington, Va. The Eagles, ranked ninth in the South Atlantic Region, are now 1-0 in CAC play and improve to 6-2 on the season.

Both teams had chances in the first half, but the match remained scoreless heading into the break. In the second, Van Maanen put the Eagles on top, 1-0, at 50:13 when he found the top left corner of the net after the Saints failed to clear an Eagles corner kick.

The Eagles found the net again just five minutes later off another corner kick attempt. Gabriel Soriano sent an accurate ball into the box as Conor Mac Murdy headed the ball to Fisher, who headed it in for the score, giving the Eagles the 2-0 victory.

Mary Washington led in shots, 17-5, and corner kicks, 8-1. Junior goalkeeper Matt Spencer had another clean sheet for UMW, while John Valcicak had five saves for the Saints.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday at 4:00 pm at N.C. Wesleyan.
