Williams' OT Score Lifts UMW Men's Soccer Past Roanoke, 2-1, on Saturday Night

Senior Mitchell Williams netted the game-winning goal off a direct free kick at 92:30 to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Roanoke College on Saturday night in Salem, Va. The Eagles improve to 5-1 on the season.

Williams also started the scoring, providing an assist on a corner kick to Colin Travis at 6:15, giving the Eagles an early lead. The game stayed at 1-0 through intermission.

In the second half, the Maroons knotted the score at 1-1 at 49:52, and the game stayed tied throughout regulation. Then, 2:30 into the first extra frame, Williams ended the contest with a perfectly placed direct free kick just inside the far post and over the outstretched hand of the Roanoke goalkeeper.

Roanoke held a 10-8 shot advantage, as well as a 7-3 lead in corner kicks. UMW goalkeeper Matt Spencer had three saves in net, and Roanoke's Nick Tadros had one save.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when the Eagles visit Dickinson College at 6:00 p.m.
