Saslowsky's Double OT Goal Lifts UMW Men's Soccer to 3-2 Victory in Season Opener

VIDEO: SASLOWSKY'S GAME WINNER

Sophomore Jack Saslowsky scored the game winning goal with 5:52 left in the second overtime to lift the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over visiting Averett University on Friday in game one of the UMW Soccer Classic at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 1-0 on the young season.

The game began with the Eagles applying the bulk of the offensive pressure, but were unable to find the net. UMW outshot the Cougars, 12-3, in the first half, but it was Averett who had the best chance in the opening frame. A low shot through traffic sent UMW goalkeeper Matt Spencer diving to his right, but he was able to grab the well-placed shot.

In the second, Averett struck quickly, as David Cuperman scored just 1:39 into play. The Eagles continued the offensive pressure, and tied the game at the 55:35 mark on a score from senior Riley Fisher, with an assist to Colin Travis.

Freshman Daniel Kalke scored his first collegiate goal to put UMW ahead at 71:32, off a Robert Tata pass, but the Cougars tied the score on a header from Daniel Surley at 78:71 on a cross from Simon Holmstrom. The game remained tied through regulation.

In the first overtime period, the Eagles had an excellent chance in the final minutes, but the direct free kick from just outside the 18 yard line struck the crossbar. In the second, the Eagles found the game winner as freshman Jacob Lovinger kept the ball from going out of bounds and found senior Jacob Burke to the end line. Burke used a strong move to turn, and found the streaking Saslowski, who calmly slid the ball into the open net for the capper.

The Eagles led in shots, 32-10, and in corner kicks, 10-4. Matt Spencer had six saves in goal for UMW, while Austin Bramhall had 10 stops for Averett.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m., when they face Stockton University.
