Fisher's Early Goal Leads UMW Men's Soccer to 1-0 Victory over Eastern Mennonite in UMW Classic

Junior forward Riley Fisher scored the game's only goal at 7:48 to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday in game one of the UMW Classic. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season.

Fisher got things going early for UMW, scoring on the Eagles' third shot of the day, on an assist from sophomore Conor Noguiera. Nogueira beat a defender on the left side into the box and passed to Fisher in front, who found the nets for his 14th career score.

The Eagles led, 1-0, at intermission, with a 7-1 shot advantage. UMW outshot the Royals, 9-1, in the second, but neither team would score.

"Eastern Mennonite is a strong squad, and coming off a big win in their opener (at Johns Hopkins), said UMW head coach Jason Kilby. "We came out strong and that effort made the difference today."

UMW led in shots, 16-2, and corner kicks, 7-3. Sophomore goalie Matt Spencer made one stop in gaining his second shutout win of the young season.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday at 1:00 against Hood College, while EMU will face Marymount at 3:30 p.m.
