UMW Men's Soccer Falls to Christopher Newport, 2-0, in CAC Tourney First Round

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to visiting Christopher Newport University in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament at the Battleground. The Eagles close the season with an 8-8-3 record.

The flow of play early slightly favored the Captains, shot totals both ways were minuscule until the 28th minute, when UMW goalkeeper Tyler Back snuffed out a breakaway chance. But the rebounded ball went to CNU's Jalon Brown, who knocked the ball into the open net from 25 yards out to give CNU the lead.

The game remained at 1-0 through halftime, and the Eagles came away with several chances in the second, primarily on a loose ball in the 62nd minute in which Conor Noguiera found himself open from 25 yards out and the keeper off his line, but his sailing shot hit the goalpost. Seconds later, the Captains countered and Patrick Burns scored unassisted to give the Captains a 2-0 advantage, and that proved to be the final score.

The Captains led in shots, 9-4, and in corner kicks, 5-3. Back had three saves for UMW, while Sam Lesko went without a save in the shutout win.
