Cisse's Goal, Assist Lead UMW Men's Soccer Past #11 CNU, 2-1, in Sunday CAC Play

Freshman Ben Cisse scored one goal and assisted on another to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over 11th ranked Christopher Newport University on Sunday at Captains Field. The Eagles improve to 7-6-2 overall, and 4-2 in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles jumped ahead early on, scoring at 10:51, as junior Mike Bennett scored on assists from Cisse and Conor Nogueira off a cross from a set piece. But the Captains answered with the tying score just minutes later, at 14:18, on a score from Alec Faulkner on a long shot on a free kick.

The score remained tied through halftime, but each time the Captains gained an opportunity, UMW goalkeeper Tyler Back was equal to the challenge, making several point-blank saves, and also a leaping catch as his momentum carried him away from the penalty area in which he caught the ball like a receiver and lunged backward with the ball to keep it in the box.

Cisse scored the game winner at 74:39 unassisted, beating the keeper from 15 yards out, giving UMW their first win over a ranked opponent this season, and handing the Captains their first conference loss.

"It was a fantastic team effort against a great team", said UMW head coach Jason Kilby, whose Eagles climbed all the way into a tie for second place in the CAC standings with a 4-2 league record, one game behind 5-1 Salisbury.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College at 4:00 p.m. in another CAC match.
