Fisher's Two Scores Lift UMW Men's Soccer Past York; Eagles Win 3-2 in OT

Sophomore Riley Fisher helped the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-0 halftime lead, and then scored the game winner less than one minute into overtime as the Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak to York College with a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-6-2 overall, and 2-2 in CAC play.

The Eagles, who hadn't beaten York since October 25, 2003, started strong, as sophomore Conor Nogueira scored on a Charlie Montano assist at 7:33 to take the early 1-0 lead. Fisher added his fourth goal of the season at 22:15, giving the Eagles a 2-0 advantage they carried to halftime.

York started the second half with renewed emotion, scoring at 50:48 as Greg Bchard scored on a Brendan Saberton assist. The game stood at 2-1 for much of the half, but the Spartans found the tying score at 84:09 on a Peter Lundgaard goal assisted by Saberton.

The Eagles defended to start the first overtime, and after a stolen pass deep in York's defense, Fisher went straight to goal and scored the game winner at 90:52 for his first game winner of the year.

Mary Washington led in shots, 16-11, and York led in corner kicks, 8-6. Senior goalie Tyler Back had three saves for the Eagles, while Charlie Johnson had four saves for York.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Southern Virginia at 4:00 p.m. in another CAC match.
