UMW Men's Soccer, Richard Stockton Duel to Scoreless Draw

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team played to a scoreless double overtime draw with Richard Stockton College on Saturday afternoon at a hot, sticky Battleground. Both teams move to 1-0-1 on the season.

Offense was at a premium in the first half, as the two teams combined for just three shots, with the visitors holding a 2-1 edge. Neither team seriously threatened until UMW had a free kick midway through the second half. Sophomore Carlos Mendoza's direct kick rifled through traffic and off the left goalpost.

Both teams had four shots in the second half, and Stockton holding a 2-1 edge in the first extra frame. Neither team had a chance in the second overtime.

Stockton led in shots, 8-6, and UMW held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior Tyler Back had three saves in the shutout, while Bobby Varga handled his only chance in 110 minutes.

The Eagles will return to action on Friday when they visit 8th ranked Ohio Wesleyan College at 7:30 pm.
