Nogueira's Game Winner in Final Seconds Lifts UMW Men's Soccer to 2-1 Win over Eastern Mennonite in Season Opener

Freshman Conor Nogueira scored his first goal with just four seconds remaining in regulation to lift the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in both teams' season opener on Friday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 1-0 on the young season.

The Eagles held the lead throughout much of the game, as sophomore Carlos Mendoza scored off a keeper save at 3:19. UMW held the 1-0 lead for nearly 72 minutes, but the Royals answered with the tying score at 75:08 on a goal from Juan Luna. The Eagles found the winning tally in Nogueira, whose blast from the left side provided the capping score at 89:56.

"Nice win to start the season", said UMW head coach Jason Kilby. "We were able to go up early, and missed some chances, but our guys kept fighting after they tied it and Conor hit a great ball for the winner."

The Eagles led in shots, 27-4, and in corner kicks, 8-2. UMW goalkeeper Tyler Back made two saves, while EMU's Matthew Overacker made eight stops.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday, as the Eagles host Richard Stockton College, who defeated Marymount University, 3-0, on Friday, at 2:30 p.m. at the Battleground.
