Virginia Beach, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team needed some late game heroics to get past Virginia Wesleyan, and got some from senior midfielder Tommy Sangbouasy (Manassas, Va./Osbourn). Sangbouasy scored two goals, both on penalty kicks, to lead the Eagles past the Marlins 3-2 on Sunday night.
The Marlins got the scoring started with a goal by Kyle Fisher at the 34 minute mark of the first half. The Eagles quickly responded with a goal of their own just minutes later. Freshman Andrew Osiecki (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) scored his first collegiate goal off of a rebound from a Mike Bennett (King's Park, N.Y./Smithtown) shot at the 36 minute mark.
UMW broke the tie off on Sangbouasy's first goal of the game. The Eagles earned a penalty kick, which Sangbouasy drilled into the back of the net to give UMW a 2-1 lead. The Eagles kept that lead throughout the entire second half until VWC's Kyle Fisher netted his second goal of the game with one second left in regulation.
In the extra session, it was Sangbouasy who provided the heroics with his second goal of the game at the 102 minute mark of the game. Sangboausy scored yet again off a penalty kick to end the game.
Junior keeper Tyler Back (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) made five saves in the win. Freshman Carlos Mendoza (Herndon, Va./Herndon) led all players with five shots in the contest.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, September 11 when UMW travels to Catholic. The match with Catholic begins at 4:00 p.m.
