Mendoza Fuels Eagles Past N.C. Wesleyan, 1-0

Virginia Beach, Va.-- The Mary Washington men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory on the first day of the Marlin Classic. The Eagles defeated the Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Carlos Mendoza (Herndon, Va./Herndon) scored the only goal of the game at the 14 minute mark of the first half. Mendoza scored unassisted from ten yards out, beating keeper Drew Thompson. "We were able to capitalize on their mistake," head coach Jason Kilby said on Mendoza's goal. For Mendoza, it was his third goal of the season. He now leads the team in goals (3) and points (6). 

Junior goalkeeper Tyler Back (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) made six saves to record his third shutout of season. Back is sporting a 0.85 goals against average this season, as well as a save percentage of .786. 

The Eagles return to action tomorrow, Sunday September 8. The Eagles will take on host Virginia Wesleyan on the final day of the Marlin Classic. The match with the Marlins kicks off at 7:00 p.m.
