Men's Soccer Picks Up First Win of the Season Against Eastern Mennonite, 3-0

Fredericksburg, Va.-- The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles defeated Eastern Mennonite 3-0 on three second half goals. The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the year. "This was a great win against a very good team." head coach Jason Kilby said after the win.

After a scoreless first half, freshman Carlos Mendoza (Herndon, Va./Herndon) broke through nine minutes into the second half. Mendoza took a pass from fellow freshman Jacob Burke (Spotsylvania, Va./Chancellor) and buried it in the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles would score again twenty minutes later, courtesy of Rory Grambo (Linden, Va./Faquier). Grambo took a pass from senior Kevin Murphy (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) 18 yards out and placed it in the bottom right corner past keeper Andrew Yoder. UMW struck again just 20 seconds later, when Murphy scored a goal of his own to seal the Eagle victory.

The Eagles outshot the Royals 14 to seven in the contest. Junior goalkeeper Tyler Back (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) stopped the lone EMU shot on goal. "We played better team defense today," Kilby said of his team Saturday. "We starting marking in advance, which put us in better position when we lost possession."

UMW returns to action the Wednesday, September 4th. The Eagles travel to Ashland, Va. to take on Randolph-Macon. The match with the Yellow Jackets begins at 4:30 pm.
