1977 Mary Washington College Men's Soccer Season in Review

1977 marked the first year of intercollegiate soccer competition for men at Mary Washington College. Despite the winless season, an evaluation of the year should not be made in those terms. It should be based, however, on the manner in which the booters represented their college and by the progress made by these mostly inexperienced players in developing individual skills and team play.

From that point of view and from the acceptance of soccer by the campus community, it was a successful start. Freshmen John Shrum (6 goals and 4 assists) and Bruce Williams (4 goals and 2 assists) provided most of the offensive punch for the soccermen. Mike Kelly, sophmore centerback, anchored a defense that withstood tremendous pressure throughout the season, and was voted the team's Most Valuable Player for 1977. Sweeperback Geoff Beardall and midfielder Scott Shaw were voted the team's Most Improved Players, while Beardall was named the team's Outstanding Defender.
