After a very close, very physical, and very back and forth match, the UMW men's rugby team came out on top with a 17-15 win against Wheeling University, a match that went right down to the wire. Sebastian Schefermann put up all 17 points on the board for UMW by putting in our first and only try of the match and nailing 4 penalty kicks throughout the match. Trading punches back and forth, the forwards and backs found themselves in an 80 minute battle through bruising runs and tackles, and territory became a crucial part of the game that often allowed us to stay within a range to kick for posts when the opportunity presented itself. After a yellow card with less than 10 minutes to go, UMW played down a man for the last portion of the match. We held our own, kept possession and milked the clock down, and got the ball out to allow for the final whistle. A bit too close for comfort, but the result was still a win. We will take from that match a few key lessons of what to work on this week as we prepare to travel to SVU on 9/23.
