Tyler Stephens has been promoted to head men's rugby coach at the University of Mary Washington, pending final HR procedures. Stephens, who has served as an assistant for the past two and a half years, takes over the highly successful program, which won the U.S. Rugby Division IAA Championship last Spring.
"We are excited to promote Tyler Stephens as the next coach of our successful men's rugby program", said UMW Interim Director of Athletics Patrick Catullo. "His knowledge of the game as well as our program makes a perfect fit for the team and the athletic department. We look forward to him taking over the reins."
"I'm very excited for the opportunity I've been given to step into the position of Head Coach", said Stephens. "My coaching staff and myself have set an outline for the team on a path that will lead to success on and off the pitch. We can't wait to start the spring season of 2019 and continued success!"
Stephens served 9.5 years in the military before moving with his family to Fredericksburg, where he has served as assistant coach and forwards coach for the Mothers squad. He is employed as a Field Service Engineer for Weber Packaging Solutions operating from home and visiting customer sites for upkeep, emergency maintenance, and installs on equipment.
He is married with three kids ages 10,11, and 15. He played rugby for 10 years before starting coaching, and now plays periodically around the country in tournaments with Savages RFC.
