Men's Rugby Prepares for Final Challenge at USA Rugby D1AA National Championship on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington men's rugby team's journey through an undefeated fall season has seen the "Mothers" climb to the top ranking in the nation after claiming the Chespeapeake Conference. The final destination for the team will arrive as the team will travel to Furman, S.C. on Sunday to face St. Joseph's University for the USA Rugby Division IAA Fall national championship.

Mary Washington ran through the Chesapeake Conference with ease this autumn, after opening with a 50-5 win at Towson and a 69-12 win over Georgetown in the opening weeks. The Eagles followed with an 88-0 whitewash of the University of Virginia and a 55-26 win over Maryland, to enter October with a 4-0 record. After topping Salisbury, 51-5, UMW downed Virginia Tech, 57-10, at Homecoming, and followed with a 48-7 win at James Madison and a 43-10 win over Mount St. Mary's.

The Mothers drew Rowan in the Division IAA quarterfinals two weeks ago in Oxford, Ohio, and won easily, 43-12, before knocking off the University of Kentucky, 38-7, in the national semifinals.

Mary Washington will face upstart St. Joseph's in the final. St. Joe's has prevailed as an underdog in each of their playoff victories, coming against Tennessee (13-10) and Bowling Green (29-10). St. Joe's was ranked 17th in the final regular season ranking.

The winner of the fall championship will advance in the Spring to face the spring champion for the title of USA Rugby overall champion for Division IAA.
