UMW Men's Lax Falls at Kean in CLC Tourney 1st Round

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 16-14 decision at Kean University on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Tournament. The Eagles close the season with a record of 8-9.

The host Cougars jumped out in front in the first with three straight scores, before freshman James Milligan put the Eagles on the scoreboard at 7:24 of the first. After another Kean score, freshman Logan Cardwell added UMW's second tally, at 4:12, and the Eagles trailed, 5-2, after 15 minutes.

The Eagles found themselves in a deepening hole in the second, as Kean scored the first four goals of the frame. Junior Henry Moag scored on a Dave Votapek assist at 8:13, and Ryan Adams cut the deficit to 9-4 at 7:43. Two more Kean scores pushed the margin to 11-4, before the Eagles battled back with late goals from Adams at 1:16 and Moag at one second to draw to within 11-6 at halftime.

UMW continued to fight back into the game to open the third, with goals from Moag and Cardwell that pulled the Eagles to within 11-8. The Cougars would score three of the last four in the period, with Ethan Castleman notching a UMW tally, and led, 15-9, after 45 minutes.

In the fourth, Kean opened the scoring before the Eagles mounted one last charge, with five straight goals. The Eagles netted four man-up goals within a two-minute span, with Votapek scoring twice, and Moag and Castleman adding one each. Votapek drew the Eagles back to within two in the final minute, but his goal proved to be the capper.

Mary Washington led in shots, 53-36, as well as ground balls, 31-25. Wyatt Martin had four saves, Riley Green one, and Ryan D'Angelo six in relief.
