UMW Men's Lax Comeback Falls Shy, 12-11, to Kean in Coastal Regular Season Finale

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 decision to Kean University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 7-8 overall, and 1-4 in Coastal Lacrosse Conference play.

The early going was dominated by the Eagles, who outscored the Cougars, 3-0, en route to a 4-0 lead. Freshman Logan Cardwell opened the scopring at 13:49, and senior Jackson Rhodes added another at 8:26 on a feed from Ethan Castleman. Henry Moag capped the first on a pass from Dave Votapek at 4:26, and freshman James Milligan opened the second at 14:21.

The Cougars responded by scoring six of the next seven tallies, with Votapek scoring on a Castleman assist during the stretch. Milligan knotted the score 1:29 before halftime, but Kean added a late score to take a 7-6 advantage to halftime.

In the third, the Eagles netted a pair of scores, from Milligan (assisted by Sterling Colgan) at 6:57 and from Jackson Popeck at 6:51 from Jacob Fowler, to gain the lead. Kean closed the third with two goals and opened the fourth with two more to grab an 11-8 lead with 11:35 left. UMW gained scores from Castleman at 10:35, Popeck at 8:43, and 5:53 from Castleman again to draw even, but Kean scored with 1:53 left. The Eagles' last shot in the final seconds was saved at point-blank range.

The Eagles led in shots, 53-37, while Kean won 16 of 26 faceoffs. UMW goalkeeper Wyatt Martin made 10 saves on the day.

The Eagles will now visit Kean in the first round of the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Tournament on April 28, tenatively scheduled for a noon start.
