Votapek, Cardwell Lift UMW Men's Lacrosse Past Montclair St., 11-8

Sophomore Dave Votapek and freshman Logan Cardwell each scored three goals to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-5 overall, and even their Coastal Lacrosse Conference record at 1-1.

After the Red Hawks reached the scoreboard in the opening minutes, the Eagles reeled off three straight goals in the first quarter. Reece Stone knotted the score at one at 11:37, and Cardwell followed at 11:16 on a Keegan Shipe assist. Henry Moag added UMW's third straight at 8:44 on a Jackson Popeck assist, before Montclair scored a pair to end the frame.

The action went back and forth in the second, as Cardwell opened the scoring in the first minute of action. The Red Hawks tied the score at four before Votapek notched his first, at 9:22. Montclair State scored on a man-up late, but Cardwell answered on a Jackson Rhodes assist with 1:44 left, and the Eagles held a 5-4 edge at halftime.

UMW pulled ahead with a four-goal outburst minutes into the third. Nathan Turney scored coast-to-coast after a defensive ground ball at 10:56, and Patton Robertson joined the scoresheet at 8:56 on a man-up chance. Stone scored another on a James Milligan assist at 6:08, and Votapek upped the lead to 10-5 on a feed from Shipe at 5:43.The Red Hawks scored once late in the third, and a pair in the fourth, but Votapek scored on a Jackson Rhodes assist with 2:40 left.

The Eagles led in shots, 43-35, and Jacob Fowler won 16 faceoffs for the Eagles. Goalkeeper Wyatt Martin made 12 saves, including several from point blank range, as well as a diving save to his right.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday night, when the Eagles visit top-ranked Salisbury University in Coastal Lax Conference play. Opening faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
