UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at Montclair St., 15-13, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 15-13 decision at Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 6-6 on the season.

The Eagles fell behind, allowing the first score, but tied the score at 1-1 with a goal from Jackson Popeck on a Jackson Davis assist at 10:19. The Red Hawks closed the period with three scores to take a 4-1 advantage.

In the second, UMW rebounded by scoring the first three goals to tie the score. Henry Moag opened the run at 13:59, and Garrett Keogh followed on an assist from J.D. Nozemack at 10:09. Dave Votapek closed the run with a tally assisted by Nozemack in a man-up situation with 9:11 left. The action swung to a back-and-forth affair, as the teams alternated the next six goals of the period. Popeck scored on a Nozemack assist, and after another Montclair score, Popeck and Nozemack teamed up again with 2:55 left. Nozemack closed the quarter with a sscore assisted by Jacob Fowler, and the score stood at 7-7 at halftime.

The teams opened the third by trading scores with Carter Lynch scoring on the man-up for UMW. Montclair State scored the next four goals, and UMW got one back to end the third on a Votapek goal from Nozemack. 

After the Red Hawks built a 15-9 lead with three to start the fourth, UMW scored the last four goals, Keogh scoring two, and Ethan Castleman and Moag scoring one each.

The Eagles led in shots, 49-40, and ground balls, 39-28. UMW goalkeeper Riley Green made nine saves.

The Eagles will return to action next Saturday when they host Stockton University at noon.
