UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at Roanoke, 13-11, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-11 decision at Roanoke College on Wednesday afternoon in Salem, Va. The Eagles slip to 4-4 on the season.

The Eagles scored first in the contest on an unassisted goal from Ethan Castleman at 13:43. After a pair of Roanoke scores, Castleman tied the score at 2-2 with 6:32 left, on a Garrett Keogh assist. The Maroons closed out the first with two mor goals to take a 4-2 lead to the second.

The Eagles quickly trimmed the margin to 4-3, as Keegan Shipe scored on a Jacob Fowler assist off the faceoff at 14:51. Roanoke scored twice early and once late to build a 7-3 lead, before Carter Lynch scored unassisted with 30 seconds left to draw UMW to within 7-4 at intermission.

UMW started the third with a flourish, scoring twice in the opening two minutes on goals from Henry Moag and Lynch. After a Maroons tally, Fowler and Shipe connected again off the resulting faceoff, pulling UMW to within 8-7 with 9:54 remaining. Roanoke scored the next two, but the Eagles then netted three straight - from J.D. Nozemack, Keogh, and Jackson Davis - to tie the score at 10-10 after three periods.

Roanoke scored the first two goals of the fourth, but Lynch scored another with 1:25 left to pull the Eagles to within 12-11. The Maroons added an insurance score in the final minute for the final margin.

Roanoke led in shots, 41-37, while Mary Washington held a slim lead in ground balls, 40-39, and faceoffs won, 15-12. Senior goalie Riley Green made 16 saves on the day for UMW.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Washington College at 1:00 p.m.
