UMW Men's Lax Falls to DeSales, 14-13

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a tight 14-13 decision to DeSales University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 3-3 on the season.

UMW fell behind in the first, 4-1, but roared back in the second to grab the lead. J.D. Nozmack turned in another banner day, and scored his first on a diving attempt with 9:50 left in the first, tying the score at 1-1. After three straight DeSales goals, senior Jackson David cut the margin to 4-2 in the final minute of the first.

After the Bulldogs netted the first two scores of the second, UMW answered with five straight to grabe a 7-6 advantage. Nozemack kickstarted the run unassisted at 6:28, and senior Patton Robertson followed seconds later off the face off to trim the margin to 6-4. Nozemack scored again in rapid fire fashion, and then Jake Furman scored with 5:25 left to tie the score. Jackson Popeck put the Eagles ahead for the first time with 2:56 left in the second. DeSales scored two in the final 28 seconds to grab an 8-7 lead going to halftime.

UMW quickly regained the lead with the first two scores of the third, as Nozemack and Unter Tipton scored unassisted. DeSales knotted the score at 9-9, and after aJacob Fowler goal after a faceoff win, tied the score again at 10-10 after 45 minutes.

In the fourth, the Bulldogs scored first, but Nozemack found the nets at 14:39 and 12:12 to give UMW a 12-11 lead. A three-goal spurt by DeSales midway through the quarter pushed their lead to 14-12, and the Eagles drew to within 14-13 with a Garrett Keogh score on a Nozemack assist with 4:24 left. The Eagles gained a turnover in the final minute, but were unable to find the tying tally.

Nozemack had six goals and an assist to lead all scorers. UMW led in shots, 46-37, and faceoffs won, 21-10. Fowler won 21 faceoffs, picking up 14 ground balls. UMW keeper Riley Green had 11 saves on the day.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday at home against Emmanuel College at 3:30 p.m.
